NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare recently announced a partnership with the University of Texas at Austin to conduct advanced neuroscience research and technology. This collaboration will expand innovative opportunities for scientists within the university and NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare; broaden the network of neuroscience researchers in Austin; and increase access to advanced medical therapies and surgical technologies for patients.
“Through this partnership, we aim to be at the forefront of neuroscience research in the coming decades,” said Philippe Bochaton, chief administrative officer of NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare. “We are excited to build our relationship with the world-class research community at the University of Texas at Austin, and are enthusiastic about the impact our combined research efforts will have on people’s lives.”
“The University of Texas at Austin’s growing presence in several areas of neuroscience research will be complemented by the hands-on expertise of physicians and surgeons at the NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare,” said Juan Sanchez, vice president of research at the university. “We look forward to the opportunities that this partnership will create for our faculty and physicians at the institute.”
As a result of this collaboration, physicians from NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare and faculty at the University of Texas at Austin are currently studying surgical imaging technologies. Key areas for collaboration include the biology and genetics of brain tumors; neurosurgery techniques and technologies; and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as technologies and clinical trials for strokes, brain tumors, movement disorders, neurological rehabilitation and other areas of clinical neuroscience.
“This collaboration is intended to translate the university’s basic research into potentially useful diagnostics and therapeutics, which can benefit patients with serious neurologic diseases,” said Richard Miller, M.D., chief commercialization officer and research professor at the University of Texas at Austin. “We are eager to create relationships where our faculty’s discoveries can be further developed and validated by physicians in the clinical setting. We will continue to bring together faculty and physicians who can collaborate in areas of unmet clinical need.”
“Our goal is to make NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare a national leader in neuroscience research,” said Matthew Cowperthwaite, Ph.D., director of research at NeuroTexas Institute at St. David’s HealthCare. “We will support brain and spine research and lead the quest for advances in the field of neurosciences.”
