If running a marathon or half marathon is on your bucket list for 2011, now’s the time to get registered and start training. The average person runs 500 miles when training for a marathon – the expanse between Austin and Amarillo – and burns the equivalent of four Big Macs, or 2,600 calories, when running one. The distance of a marathon, 26.2 miles, is the same as running back and forth across a football field 460 times. On Feb. 20, join thousands of athletes facing these odds at the 2011 LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon.

The Austin Marathon and Half Marathon has generated more than $90 million for Austin’s economy and $6 million for local and national charities, including LIVESTRONG, through 26 miles for 26 charities. This program creates a platform for the selected non-profits to generate public awareness of their mission and dollars from charity runners to support their cause.

“We look forward to the opportunity to inspire and empower even more people affected by cancer through this important event in the city we are so proud to call home,” said Doug Ulman, LIVESTRONG president and CEO.

To help you get started, the LIVESTRONG Austin Marathon and Half Marathon website offers simple online training plans. As the official LIVESTRONG training partner, Rogue Running offers a more hands-on approach, featuring group workouts, customized training schedules, nutritional information and rehabilitation resources.

In addition to being the title sponsor, LIVESTRONG is participating in the marathon with Team LIVESTRONG, a group of individuals who will raise at least $500 and are committed to inspiring and empowering those affected by cancer.

“Being a part of the LIVESTRONG team represents my continued efforts to raise awareness for the fight against cancer,” said Lindsey Ball, a Team LIVESTRONG member. “My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1999. Being a caretaker for my mom, the summer after my freshman year of college was not the summer I anticipated, but one that has forever changed me as a woman.

“After successfully fighting her bout with cancer, my dad was later diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2006. The advances in cancer treatments that were evident in seven years time were hard to fathom and encouraging to my family. My father braved the then-innovative Da Vinci procedure and has been cancer-free since.”
