The University of Texas at San Antonio has long helda strong name and reputation. UTSA has once againbeen formally recognized for their continued rise.

UTSA was recognized as a top national leader ingraduating Hispanic students, further affirming theirimportance as the second largestof the nine universities in the UTSystem.

UTSA ranked No. 4 in the nationfor awarding undergraduatedegrees, No. 10 for Master’s andNo. 57 for doctoral degrees, accordingto The Hispanic Outlookin Higher Education magazine.The magazine surveyed the2006–2007 academic year of theTop 100 predominantly Hispanicservingcolleges and universitiesin the United States and PuertoRico. The report includes Hispanicstudent participation across allmajor fields of study.

Hispanic students represented49 percent of Bachelor’s degreerecipients, and represented39 percent of those earning aMaster’s degree. Also, for the firsttime, the university made the listof the top 100 schools graduatingHispanic doctoral candidates.

"We are excited to see thenumber of Hispanic studentsearning doctoral degrees at UTSAcontinue to rise and generate nationalrecognition for our university," said Ricardo Romo,UTSA President. "The growth of student enrollment inboth our Master’s and doctoral programs are key componentsin our mission to become a premier researchuniversity."

Hispanic students majoring in biological sciencesfrom the UTSA College of Sciences, continue to lead thenation in the undergraduate degrees awarded, a trendthat has continued for nearly 12 years. The School ofArchitecture ranked No. 2 in awarding undergraduatedegrees for the 2006–2007 academic year, and the Collegeof Business ranked second as well, in awarding undergraduatedegrees to Hispanics studying business andmarketing.

Further demonstrating theuniversity’s rise, the UTSA Institutefor Cyber Security (ICS)was recently awarded a $1 milliongrant from the Departmentof Defense, as part of afive–year $7.5 million Multi–University Research Initiative.

UTSA’s ICS role willbe to research, develop, andtest models that will aim toprotect the transfer and sharingof government informationamongst agencies. RaviSandhu, Executive Directorof ICS will lead the UTSAteam, along with ShouhuaiXu, Lutcher Brown EndowedChair in Cyber Security andprofessor of computer science.

Sandhu says developingand researching this typeof technology is a more proactiveway to seek informationin today’s world of informationsharing. "In this post–9/11era, we need to move from thedoctrine of a need–to–knowpolicy of information gathering to a more proactive oneof need–to–share, where people are readily seeking andreceiving information," said Sandhu. "One of the problemsidentified in the 9/11 Commission Report was theinability of people to connect the dots, in part due to thelack of information sharing."
