Nobody is perfect
It’s true.
So often we expect perfection from our family, friends and co-workers. We demand those around us to achieve perfection in all that they do (or at least all that affects us), and we get upset when they do not meet our expectations. We become so caught up in things being done just the right way – our right way – that we lose sight of the end and focus only on the means.
Let me suggest what we need to start looking for is: Excellence.
Ecclesiastes 9:10 says: Whatever your hand finds to do; do it with all your might. Solomon, the author of the book, was the wealthiest and wisest man who ever lived. He had seen it all, tried it all, and done it all. As he comes to the end of his life he writes the book of Ecclesiastes as a “Here is what I learned” manual.
He is not suggesting that we flawlessly complete each task and demand the same of others. No, Solomon is telling us that no matter what we are doing, to do it as well as we can. No one bats .1000. No one closes every deal. No one makes the right decision every time.
Recently, we all watched the McAllister Park All-Stars rise to the top. By now, they’re all back home and deeply entrenched in their school work. All that is left of their glorious trip to the Little League World Series are pictures, videos and newspaper clippings. But in each of their minds they can rest assured that they gave it all they had.
They may not have won the big game, but they won the hearts of everyone in San Antonio. A small elite group of boys, who went on the ride of a life time and took San Antonio with them, can know without a shadow of a doubt that they gave it their all and left everything on the field. What a great feeling to have!
And so my challenge is this: We should all strive to have the same attitude these boys and coaches had. We should strive for excellence, not perfection, in all we do. We should give it our all, leave it all on the field, and have no regrets.
No matter where we find ourselves in life we should give it all we got. Encourage the people around you, your friends, your family and your employees to pursue excellence in all they do.
