On May 1, 1996, the InstituteFor Women’s Health was formedwhen six OB/GYN partners andI envisioned a large practicethat offered convenient women’shealthcare in a compassionateenvironment. We understoodwomen have many health–relatedchallenges and conception issometimes one of them.
We opened the AdvancedFertility Center to provide fertilityservices for our patients, offeringcouples cutting–edge technologyand customized treatment plansduring this new chapter in theirlives. The Fertility Center islocated at the North CentralBaptist Atrium Women’s Centerin Stone Oak.
At the Advanced FertilityCenter, we offer in–vitrofertilization, robotic laparoscopicinfertility surgery, ovulationinduction, artificial inseminationwith donor sperm and treatmentof recurrent pregnancy loss, toname a few.
Our experienced medicalstaff is available to answerany questions or concerns inEnglish or Spanish. A financialcoordinator is also on hand toanswer any questions aboutinsurance coverage, paymentoptions, and financial programsavailable for couples undergoingfertility services.
In 1995, Lisa Romo came tothe Institute For Women’s Healthbecause she and her husbandJohnny were searching for aphysician who could help achievetheir dream; to start a family.Multiple pregnancy attemptswith in–vitro fertilization endedin miscarriages and the Romo’swere devastated every time, buttried repeatedly for several yearsto realize their dream of Lisacarrying their child. Finally inOctober 2006 their dream becamea reality. Lisa once again begantreatment for in–vitro fertilization,but this time there was anaddition. Her treatment planincluded the use of a gestationalcarrier, Lisa’s sister. An embryotransfer was successful withher sister and resulted in a twinpregnancy. Lisa and Johnny wereovercome by emotion. My staffand I developed a deep bondwith the Romo’s and were happybut optimistically cautious. Forthe Romo’s, Lisa’s sister, and ourmedical staff, every blood testand sonogram was a moment ofguarded anticipation.
May 18, 2007 brought the storyto a well deserved happy ending.Lisa and Johnny Romo becameproud parents when her sisterdelivered the beautiful twin boysvia cesarean section. Johnny Jr.(named after dad) and JosephRomo (named after me) weregreeted not only by their parents,but by their Aunt and Uncle andall their relatives and friends.Every birth is a miracle; this onewas truly inspirational.

Joseph R. Garza, M.D. is aDiplomate of the American Boardof Obstetrics and Gynecology.He graduated with honors fromKeystone School and AustinCollege in Sherman, Texas. Dr.Garza earned his M.D. from theUniversity of Texas SouthwesternMedical School at Dallas andcompleted a residency in OB/GYN at John Sealy Hospital inGalveston, Texas. He completedhis fellowship in Infertility andReproductive Endocrinology. Dr.Garza is Board Certified by theAmerican College of Obstetricsand Gynecology. Dr. Garzais a member of the AmericanAssociation of GynecologistsLaparoscopists, the Society forReproductive Surgeons, AmericanSociety of Reproductive Medicineand a Fellow of the AmericanCollege of Obstetrics andGynecology. He performed thefirst GIFT procedure in privatepractice in San Antonio at theNix Hospital in 1985. Dr. Garzais an international lecturerand instructor in advancedlaser, reproductive surgical andmicrosurgical procedures. Dr.Garza is married and has fourchildren.
