Dr. Roberto San Martin's passion for science and community service becomes readily apparent when one looks at his life. At age eighteen, he began by majoring in zoology at the University of Texas at Austin, and he continued his education with a Master's degree in Physiology. In 1967, San Martin began teaching as a lab instructor at the University of Houston in several courses, including Biology and Physiology. By 1971, he went to Fort Sam Houston to volunteer his medical expertise in an honorable military service that lasted six years. He was honorably discharged at the end of his service and received an Army Commendation Medal. San Martin continued his work as an instructor and further increased his education, eventually becoming a Chief Resident in the Department of Ophthalmology at UTMB. The San Antonio native began work in 1980 at Santa Rosa Hospital and became Chief of Ophthalmology in 1986 and continues to work there to this day. He served as the Vice President of the Bexar County Medical Society in 2007 and is serving as President Elect in 2008. Additionally, Dr. San Martin gives back both to local and outside communities by being involved in several volunteering associations. He is involved with the group Los Quijotes who travel annually to Mexico and volunteer their services in several areas in need of medical care.
