While most children play make-believe, doctor or teacher, Dr. Sonya Alvarado dreamed of becoming a dentist. At age six, her playmate patients were her five siblings. Each sibling would stand in line to be seen and to share in her dream.
Those childhood games, however, grew to reality and today Dr. Alvarado is an experienced dentist with The Orsatti Dental Group where she serves patients with a welcoming smile and gentle touch. “It is nice to be part of an office that is beautiful, well organized and most importantly where everyone in the office goes above and beyond to take care of the patients and each other,” says Alvarado.
After graduating from Incarnate Word High School, the San Antonio native earned a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science from Texas A&M University before joining the highly accredited University of Texas Health Science Center Dental School, ultimately earning her doctorate in Dental Surgery in 2003.
Dr. Alvarado credits her success and decision to pursue a medical career directly to her parents, Antonio and Olga. “They encouraged me to aim high,” she states. “I was the only one out of six children that completed graduate studies, so it was a proud moment for all of us.” Her father Antonio explains, “I always tell her to think about satisfying her patients first. If they are happy with the work you do, they will keep coming back.”
As someone who deeply cares for her patients and those in her community, Dr. Alvarado invested time early in her career giving to others at one of San Antonio’s public health clinics before joining The Orsatti Dental Group. There she was able to care for patients with various needs. This included caring for the homeless of San Antonio as well as those in need at the women’s shelter. “It is so very important for these individuals to get the help they need and to educate them about the importance of oral health,” states Alvarado.
Today, at The Orsatti Dental Group, Dr. Alvarado focuses on general dentistry as well as many of the more popular cosmetic options available for patients today. A participant of continuing education at the prestigious Seattle Institute for Advanced Dental Education and certified by Invisalign, Dr. Alvarado prides herself in bringing the latest treatment, techniques and options to her patients.
Even though this dentist has a special knack for putting people at ease, it often takes advanced training to treat patients who are afraid of coming to the dentist. Dr. Alvarado is certified to treat her patients with oral sedation, or what is commonly referred to as sedation dentistry. Using oral sedation, treatment can be completed quickly and comfortably and is a good choice for patients whom the doctor describes as “highly anxious” or who admit to being nervous or uncomfortable in the dental office. “Dr. Alvarado is a compassionate and caring dentist,” says Dr. Louis Orsatti, “we are fortunate to have someone like her on our team.”
“Our goal is that our patients feel they are our top priority. We are here to take care of them and we really try to spoil them. It’s a team effort that starts with a friendly voice when the phone is answered all the way to the staff who are in the treatment rooms with the doctors comforting and caring for the patients during treatment. We strive to provide the best dental care and experience possible,” says Alvarado.
Visiting with this doctor, you quickly see why the patients of The Orsatti Dental Group enjoy her so much. Whether sharing her love of traveling, cooking or her dogs, “Charlie” and “Monty”, it is evident that she is passionate about all she does in life.
