Why home healthcare can benefit everyone – not just the patient

With sickness and injury being as common asthe sun’s rise and fall, it is imperative that welook at the future with an eye on our healthand the health of those we love. Home healthcare providers should understand the needs oftheir clients and work to serve them.

It starts with patients, who are not just numbers on a page orfaces in the crowd; they are individual people with individualcircumstances who need the proper care and instruction ofphysicians. Whether a patient has a serious illness or is recoveringfrom injury, he or she will depend on the physician toanswer an expansive array of questions and provide knowledgeableinformation that can be trusted.

There is a multitude of patients who will reach the point thatthey can no longer stay in the hospital. At this point, it is oftenideal and most fitting for the patient to transition into homehealthcare. Home healthcare, simply put, is healthcare deliveredin a patient's home. Home healthcare services can rangefrom in–home nursing care or rehabilitation following a hospitalstay, to ongoing assistance with daily living activities such asshopping, meal preparation or bathing.

It is the responsibility of the hospital’s or doctor’s officestaff to provide adequate information for the patient to bein a comfort zone when it comes to the transition into homehealth care. Hospital visits and surgery are not often easy orconvenient experiences. When the rehabilitation and recoveryrequire home health services, the patient relies on the wisdomand skill of the doctor to give the best referral for a homehealth care agency.

Peaceful, Easy Feeling

When the time comes for home health care, there is nothingmore encouraging than having a confident recommendationand comforting reassurance from the physician. It is vital forthe patient and the doctor to be knowledgeable about the homehealth care facility.

Patients will more than likely want an agency with homehealth aides who are organized, gentle, and who have a senseof importance and demeanor, as well as a sympathetic attitude.Other things to consider when referring patients to a homehealth care agency include the licenses and accreditations ofthe company, along with the services it provides, number ofpatients served, and measures of their success with treatment.

Aside from the bigger questions about an agency's accreditationand licensing, you also need to dive into the details. Findout what procedures a provider has in place to handle emergencies. Are its caregivers available 24 hours a day and sevendays a week? Do they provide staff specific to the needs of thepatient, such as home health aides and licensed vocationalnurses? Will they be sending the same person each day or willit vary? Consistency is key to good care.

Care Where You Need It Most

Patients of all ages should have the opportunity to receivethe care they need where they need it most—at home. Homehealthcare not only benefits the patient by allowing them torecuperate in the comfort of their own home surrounded byfamily and friends, it also gives the insurance company andpatient financial benefits. Even illnesses that would have beenserious enough for hospitalization several years ago can betreated effectively in your own home under the supervision ofyour doctor and the right clinical staff.
