Each Regent Care Center facility has within its midst dedicated professionals that are focused on the continuum of care. Regent Management Services, LP manages 11 nursing facilities in seven Texas cities, as well as one in Reno, Nevada. The newest facility is currently under construction in San Marcos, Texas. There are three separately operated Regent Care Facilities in the San Antonio area: Regent Care Center of San Antonio, Regent Care at Medical Center, Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms, all of which emphasize quality care.
The name “Nursing Home” is one of our recent English language misnomers. The mission at each Regent Care Center facility “is to provide quality care and life in a warm, beautiful and luxurious setting for residents and their families, a safe environment that offers personal and professional growth for our associates and a prudent physical plan.” All of the Regent Care facilities are primarily focused on short–term rehabilitation, with roughly 33 percent dedicated to those requiring long–term care.
Each Regent Care facility offers a variety of services designed to provide comprehensive rehabilitation and skilled nursing for residents. The staff and physicians work together to create an individualized treatment plan to maximize the success and progress of each resident. Each facility is fast–paced and under the direction of key professionals: the Administrator, who drives the business, the overall Medical Director, who drives the care, and in some instances, a specialized Medical Director, who drives the care related to specialized services. The success of the San Antonio area facilities is dependent upon key management staff consisting of Bob Martinez, Trudy Venette, Susan Jakob, Toni Parks and Ron Byers who will be located at the new San Marcos location (formerly at the Oakwell Farms facility).
The Five Star rated Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms has three key players working to make it a premier rehabilitation facility, Trudy Venette, the Administrator, Dr. Gerald Harrington, the Medical Director, and Dr. Patrick Mulroy, the Rehabilitation Medical Director.
Venette, is a Master’s Level Administrator with a degree in Public Administration/Health Care Administration. She has been a licensed Administrator for 17 years working in several states before coming to Texas. Joining Regent Care Center at Oakwell Farms was an easy decision.
“I wanted to work for a company that focused on quality care, maintained the physical plant, had few layers in the management structure, and had a facility that operated a large volume of short term rehabilitation, a niche that is becoming a hugely important aspect in the continuum of care,” says Venette.
Since her arrival, the facility has exceeded expectations on many levels. The success is due to her savvy business sense in the continuum of care arena, and her strong partnership with the two Medical Directors, Dr. Harrington and Dr. Mulroy.
Dr. Harrington, the Medical Director at Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms, is involved in many aspects of the facility especially in terms of the quality of care. He is a part of the facility’s Continuous Quality Improvement process, and he works with the facility management to ensure the high quality expectations of the facility are being met.
“Dr. Harrington is a hands–on Medical Director and can be seen in the facility any given day, at practically any given time. He is a man with a mission to meet the ever–changing needs in the continuum of care market,” says Venette.
Dr. Harrington has played a role in redefining the term “nursing home”.
“We have re–structured our practice to meet the needs of today’s rehabilitation center. Patients are being discharged sooner from the hospital setting and with higher acuity levels. The “nursing home” is rapidly phasing out, and the short–term rehabilitation center like Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms is the type of facility required to meet the needs of the healthcare group and the community,” says Dr. Harrington.
Dr. Mulroy has an impressive CV. His list of credentials includes Diplomat with the American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, American Board of Pain Medicine, and National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a graduate of the Eastern Virginia Medical School, with Post Graduate Training in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.
Dr. Mulroy is an integral part of the facility’s care delivery as the Rehabilitation Medical Director of Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms. A small team of therapists and therapy assistants, as well as a physical therapist, who is the in–facility Director of Rehabilitation, make up the team that has catapulted the facility as a major player in San Antonio’s continuum of care market.
“As the Rehabilitation Medical Director of Regent Care Center of Oakwell Farms, I am able to direct the team in flexing their strengths in this phase of the care continuum,” says Dr. Mulroy. “This short–term rehab environment puts the focus and attention on the individual to meet the number one objective – Get Well and Go Home. We are able to provide a high level of care at the facility and meet the demands of the ever–changing healthcare environment, giving us the ability to reach the best patient outcomes.”
These three professionals move forward conscientiously looking for ways to improve, listening to fellow colleagues and their protocols for care, and improving the skills of the staff. They are checking the vital signs and taking the pulse of running a business – their method is reaching success.
