With each year that passes by, we all expect certain changes to occur in our lives. But what do we do when that change begins to affect our eye sight, safety and lifestyle. Many elderly people do not know why their vision is less than perfect. Therefore, the diagnosis of cataracts often comes as a surprise. Even though more than 20 million Americans have a developing cataract, few fully understand what they are, or how their vision is affected. Dr. Edward Rashid is a pioneer in refractive procedures, and has successfully performed thousands of cataract procedures.

What is a cataract? Our eyes are much like the lens of a camera. The lens of the eye picks up images and focuses light onto the back of the eye. As we age, this lens can begin to cloud, causing poor vision. Even though this condition is primarily age related, various other medical conditions or risk factors can speed this process: exposure to UV light, trauma to the eye, diabetes, and or certain medications, just to name a few. Currently, the only way to treat this condition is to replace the clouded lens.

What are the symptoms of a cataract? Cataracts usually develop slowly and painlessly, and it is the most common cause of vision loss in people 55 and older. One of the most common symptoms is blurred vision in one or both eyes. Many patients also experience glares, halos, dullness in colors, and have difficulty driving, watching TV or reading.

When it is the right time to have cataract surgery? The timing of cataract surgery is different for each patient. If someone is still functioning well in her environment and her visual loss is minimal, then there is usually no need to consider treatment. In the past, it was common to wait until the cataract was fully developed but now, due to safer technology and techniques, doctors can recommend treatment based on the manner in which the condition is affecting the patient's life.

How is a cataract removed? The procedure on average lasts 15 to 45 minutes, and is usually performed in an out-patient surgical center. Patients feel minimal pain with the use of sedation and anesthetic medication. In the vast majority of cases, the cataract is removed using advanced ultrasonic energy. The cloudy lens is almost always replaced with a plastic implant called an Intraocular lens (IOL). Recent advances in the testing and measuring of the length and curvature of the eye have made the selection process of the Intraocular lenses more accurate.

Can you tell me about the recent advancements in Intraocular Lenses (IOL)? There have been remarkable changes in the design of the Intra post cataract surgery ocular lenses, in the past three to four years. Traditionally, patients with standard implants have still needed glasses for reading after cataract surgery. However, the new Intraocular lenses can correct for astigmatism and in select patients can reduce the need for glasses for both distance and near.

How long is the recovery? What are typical results that patients can expect after their cataract treatment? Usually we ask our patients to take it easy for a day or two after their procedure. With the exception of a few activities, such as lifting and swimming, most patients can resume their daily routine shortly after their procedure. Modern cataract surgery is one of the most common procedures in the United States, and its evolution has been nothing short of remarkable. As with any surgical procedure there are certain risks, therefore, it is important that you choose a qualified and experienced surgeon to be sure that you understand and feel comfortable with the treatment. A cataract procedure will not only drastically improve and enhance the patient's vision, but also their life as a whole.
