Tomorrow's Science in Today's World

What do life and applied sciences, biomedical research and development, human performance and factors, medical and scientific staffing have in common? One dynamic, small business named Eagle Applied Sciences, LLC.

Eagle is a local company formed three years ago, offering these services and more to our customers both domestically and abroad. Eagle is one of San Antonio's newest companies in the government service arena under the steady leadership of Dr. Guy Banta. With his guidance, Eagle offers a plethora of services to the U.S. government, Department of Defense, NASA and different branches of our military.

Eagle is a Small Disadvantaged business and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bristol Bay Native Corp. The BBNC is one of 13 designated regional Alaska Native Corporations (ANC) formed in 1972. Eagle is recognized for its excellence in program/project management, medical and applied sciences, medical informatics and biomedical R&D services. Eagle also holds the 8(a) designation awarded by the SBA.

This allows Eagle to submit proposals on both 8(a) set-aside contracts as well as submissions in the competitive bid sector of government contracting. Under Banta's leadership, Eagle's growth over the past three years has been swift, receiving many U.S. military and other governmental agency contract awards and research grants, executing each with the utmost accuracy and efficiency.

Most notably, Eagle has over 50 ombudsmen stationed nationally and internationally to lend on-going support to the wounded warriors and their families, assuring that needs are met and families are reunited.

During the past several years, Eagle's engineers have been working in partnership with NASA in the life sciences and bio-medical research fields, designing and implementing biomedical countermeasure equipment (treadmill, cycle, resistive exercise) and biosensors used to measure and track the crews vital signs while in the Extravehicular Activity suit, health maintenance equipment (medical kits, defibrillator) and environmental equipment (radiation, water, toxicology and air monitoring) used in the International Space Station and NASA's future Constellation Program.

Other contract awards for Eagle include conducting bench research at Lackland Air Force Base to identify the genomic prevalence of risk-conferring markers for type 2 diabetes among the young, healthy active duty population in the Air Force.

Providing evidence-based medicine through genetic screening allows the opportunity for early prevention and control strategies by altering lifestyle and environmental factors that would potentially contribute to disease or using pharmaceutical intervention to stave off the co-morbidities associated with the disease.

In a support role, Eagle's scientists also provide the advanced molecular laboratory surveillance for disease screening, environmental agent monitoring and serve as an emergency response service pertaining to public health through rapid detection and intervention. These real-world studies support the sustainment of our soldiers in biologically hostile domain by promoting earlier and targeted interventions.

Even though Eagle is in its infancy with regard to its conceptualization, it is evident that given the experience of Banta and the cadre of staff members he has assembled, and counting the years of experience and expertise in their respective fields, Eagle has more qualitative years than that of most companies doing business in the federal arena for more than 10 years.

On Oct. 21, 2009 Eagle was awarded Contractor of the Year by the San Antonio Business Opportunity Council as it pertains to the 311th Human Systems Wing located at Brooks-City Base. The award was accepted by Banta and some of Eagle's employees on behalf of the contract they currently have at the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine.

Eagle employs more than 60 personnel within USAFSAM and supports the two primary missions of USAFSAM, training and evaluating the health of the soldier. The company's subject matter experts are involved in the training of all Air Force flight surgeons. Eagle's physicians perform complicated medical assessments for rated staff providing recommendations as to their suitability to return or continue to perform aircrew duties.

Our staff also performs initial Air Force flying physicals and FAA class 3 physicals on all AFROTC cadet pilot candidates. They also provide treatment with hyperbaric medicine for Department of Defense eligible patients and develop and maintain the Air Force Waiver Guide.

As one may surmise, Eagle Applied Sciences is on the cutting edge of the high-end scientific world and bears consideration when projects crop up that require execution with excellence either federally or commercially.
